Since 2017, the "Quantum Engineering Grenoble" program has contributed to consolidating the Grenoble ecosystem for quantum technologies, through the awarding of thesis grants and the installation of Chairs of Excellence on interdisciplinary projects, and the implementation of seminars at the interfaces. Actions were initiated and supported by the Idex project Université Grenoble Alpes and the European Union (Marie Sklodovska Curie Cofund ). This program was built thanks to the structuring of the Grenoble site through excellent federative actions (Grenoble Nanosciences Foundation, Labex LANEF). These initiatives have created a synergy between the university and major research organizations.

An ecosystem for quantum technologies : From the philosopher to the industrial

To achieve the second quantum revolution, Université grenoble Alpes (UGA) is building an interdisciplinary ecosystem based on fundamental quantum physics.

Quantum computing

Theoretical quantum computing appeared at the UGA in 2001 and is growing with INRIA. Important results have been obtained in complexity and algorithmics and in computational models. Since 2019, the UGA hosts one of the 4 French institutes for Artificial Intelligence, MIAI, which brings a new dynamic to the site. The synergy between the scientists working on "hardware" developments and the computer scientists makes it possible to create algorithms and compilation languages that are as close as possible to hardware specifications. The energy dimensioning of quantum computers has become the main topic of a work combining researchers and engineers.

Human sciences

The second quantum revolution began in the philosophical discussions between the fathers of quantum mechanics. The emergence of new technologies raises profound societal questions. A philosophy & sociology group is currently on board at the Institut Néel, in close interaction with theoretical physicists who are interested in human sciences. This rare experiment contributes in an original way to the visibility and attractiveness of Grenoble.

Industry

A significant proportion of the theses in the "Quantum Engineering Grenoble" program include an internship with our industrial partners. For the PhD students, these exchanges contribute both to their integration and to the valorization of their work in the local economic environment.
