The Quantum Explorations 2050 aim to identify new interdisciplinary research fronts in quantum technologies through a Science-Society dialogue, enabling the humanities and social sciences, and quantum science and technology communities to anticipate the human and societal challenges posed by these technologies in the medium to long term.
To address this ambition, SFR Innovacs has developed a methodology combining Participatory Science and narrative methods (Design Fiction, scenario-based design, foresight, etc.).
The Participatory Science approach facilitates this Science-Society dialogue, involving quantum tech providers (both academic and industrial) and all stakeholders who will participate in, and/or be impacted by, the societal implementation of these technologies (political and economic actors, as well as civil society in the broadest sense). The Quantum Explorations 2050 thus brought together approximately 160 people—“co-authors”—with extremely diverse profiles, skills, and backgrounds, ranging from students to business leaders, including elected officials and researchers.
Using of creative tools such as Design Fiction makes possible to engage this diverse audience — whose levels of subject expertise vary widely—in a playful and collaborative way when addressing such a complex and intangible topic, and to collectively envision future applications and uses by exploring imaginative scenarios involving technologies that do not yet exist.
To maintain consistency with the technological maturity timelines anticipated by QST stakeholders, the projection timeframe was set for 2050.
Explorations 2050 is structured around three highlights:
Season 1 – Narratives (2022–2024): Development of forward-looking narratives
Season 2 – Quantum Dates (2024–2025): Analysis of the challenges identified in the narratives and formulation of new interdisciplinary research priorities
Season 3 – Science (2025-...) : Launching new interdisciplinary research projects, creating and disseminating new knowledge.
The Quantum Dates - Quantum Explorations 2050 Season 2
Season 2 of Quantum Explorations 2050 kicked off in September 2024 with the launch of a new series of seminars, Quantum Dates. These seminars build on the community and the narratives created in Season 1, with the goal of analyzing the content of the narratives to identify societal issues that could fuel new interdisciplinary research frontiers.
A three-step method:
Thematic framing through a state-of-the-art overview provided by a specialist researcher.
Thematic introduction to the content of the Quantum Explorations 2050 narratives.
Analysis of the issues arising from the narratives.
